Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian
O Lord and Master of my life,
take from me the spirit of sloth,
faint-heartedness, lust of power and idle talk.
But give rather, the spirit of chastity,
humility, patience and love to Thy servant.
Yea, Lord and King!
Grant that I may see my own
transgressions and not judge my
brother, for blessed art Thou unto
the ages of ages.
Amen.

What do you desire? If you ever get quiet enough in your soul to drill down to the most basic desire of your heart, you will know who you are! That’s why the Church gives us the story of Zacchaios as the very first hint of the work of Great Lent coming in the next several weeks. The Church prepares us for the work of Great Lent by first confronting us with a man who desired to see Christ more than anything else in his life. And his encounter with Christ changed him and his village forever.
